The SUN "Games"

Why we call our techniques “games”

In SUN®coaching we refer to our processes as “games” because they are both playful and important. The analogy fits because games come with an explicit set of rules that govern behavior, much like the rules of any game govern the players’ actions. When people play a game, they agree to a certain set of limitations in order to create a challenge. Half the fun of playing is adapting and honing skills in a distinctive environment. It is the nature of games to provide alternative frameworks for engagement, expression, and growth, whisking us away from our everyday context. Naming an activity a game breaks its hold on people and puts them in charge. If the rules they play do not light up their life, they can create a new set of rules. People invent games—and rules.

The intentions behind our unique techniques

SUN® values individual expression and recognizes that game words and structured processes are a choice. The intention behind the SUN Games is more important than their structure. Clients may want to create their own version. Here are the intentions behind our unique techniques:

The Results Game is a way to track the degree your choices are in line with your Life Purpose. It arises out of your Purpose, which you will determine as a part of the SUN® program.

The Well-Being Game is a tool to monitor your experience of being. Using it, you can identify and monitor various facets of your well being.

The Guidelines for Living capture your learning when you reflect on the difference between what you wanted and what you created. Guidelines can come from achieving a desired result or not. They arise from your questions for reflection and analysis.

The repeated cycle of going from Results Game to Well-Being Game, to Guidelines for Living ensures that clients get into the habit of applying their learning using a feedback loop. This process sustains your experience of being in charge of your life, also called empowerment.
